Articulation and Phonological Awareness Activities

Why Speech Sound Therapy Should Address Both

Articulation therapy rarely exists in isolation. That is why phonological awareness activities can be crucial

Through continuing education and clinical experience, one thing has become increasingly clear: speech sound development and phonological awareness are deeply connected. In many cases, there is no such thing as “just an articulation student.” Speech sound disorders often involve broader phonological and language-based skills that directly impact literacy.

Understanding this connection has changed how I approach articulation therapy—and it has significantly improved generalization and long-term outcomes.

A Quick Review of Key Terms

For parents and newer speech-language pathologists, here’s a brief overview to make sure we’re using the same language.

  • Speech Sound Disorders (SSD): Difficulties with producing speech sounds clearly and accurately.
  • Phonological Disorders: Difficulties with how sounds and sound patterns are represented and organized in the brain.
  • Phonological Awareness: The ability to recognize and manipulate the sounds of language (e.g., rhyming, syllable segmentation, identifying sounds in words).

While these are distinct areas, they are closely related in development and treatment.

What Clinical Experience and Research Show

Children with speech sound disorders—especially those with persistent or atypical errors—are at increased risk for phonological awareness weaknesses and later reading difficulties.

Whether phonological awareness deficits contribute to speech sound errors or develop alongside them is less important than the clinical implication:

Both should be addressed during articulation therapy.

When therapy focuses only on sound production without building awareness of sounds within words, generalization is often slower and less consistent.

Why Phonological Awareness Belongs in Articulation Therapy

Incorporating phonological awareness activities into articulation sessions helps children:

  • Develop awareness of speech sounds
  • Understand how sounds function in words
  • Strengthen sound–letter connections
  • Improve carryover beyond structured practice

This approach supports not just speech clarity, but long-term communication and literacy skills.

Screening and Targeting Phonological Awareness

I now screen phonological awareness skills for all articulation clients, even those working on later-developing sounds like /r/.

If a child demonstrates difficulty in any area, phonological awareness is immediately incorporated into therapy sessions.

Phonological awareness skills generally progress from easier to more complex:

  1. Rhyming
  2. Sentence segmentation
  3. Syllable segmentation and blending
  4. Identifying first and last sounds
  5. Sound manipulation (most complex)

Therapy begins at the child’s current level and builds upward.

Even when a child performs well on these tasks, phonological awareness strategies remain part of therapy to support sound awareness and generalization.

How I Integrate Phonological Awareness into Articulation Sessions

At the beginning of sessions, I include a brief phonological awareness warm-up tied directly to the target sound.

These activities may include:

  • Tracing or identifying the letter associated with the sound
  • Identifying words that contain the target sound
  • Rhyming with the target sound
  • Reviewing articulator placement and movement
  • Practicing the sound in initial, medial, and final positions

This structured approach builds:

  • Self-awareness
  • Focused attention to goals
  • Meaningful repetition
  • Awareness of sound use beyond drills

Phonological Awareness Activities for Speech Therapy

High-quality materials that combine articulation and phonological awareness—especially digital or teletherapy-friendly options—can be difficult to find.

To meet this need, I created interactive phonological awareness activities designed specifically for speech therapy sessions. These activities help children identify and attend to sounds while keeping engagement high.

About

Hi,

I'm  Bridget Giraldo, MS CCC-SLP

I've been a speech-language pathologist since 2006 — in schools, hospitals, preschools, and private practice. I created Speech Therapy Talk because I kept making materials I couldn't find anywhere else: research-based, bilingual, no-prep, and built for real caseloads. Now, I share them here.
