1. Treasure Hunt

A high-interest game that naturally encourages language.

How to play

  • Hide toys in a box, bucket, or sandbox
  • Take turns “finding” items
  • Name the item and say something about it

Skills supported

  • Vocabulary
  • Early grammar
  • Turn-taking
  • Sentence building

Why it works: Repetition + excitement = strong language input.

2. Block Play

Blocks support far more than motor skills.

Try this

  • Talk about size, height, and position
  • Build something together, then create a simple story with it

Skills supported

  • Concepts (big/small, up/down)
  • Vocabulary
  • Early narrative structure

Storytelling through play lays the groundwork for later comprehension and writing.

3. Mealtime Talk

Meals are one of the best times for language learning.

Why

  • Your child is seated and attentive
  • They can see your face and mouth
  • Language is tied to a meaningful routine

Focus on:

  • Naming foods
  • Describing actions (cutting, eating, pouring)
  • Using short, clear sentences

Children learn best while playing with other children and with adults who create lots of natural language learning. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend that you read how to talk to 2-3 year old.  A few simple adjustments such as body height, how you ask questions and when NOT to talk can make all the difference.
