How to Use Fall Articulation Smash Mats

These pages are often called smash mats or dot pages, and they can be used in many different ways depending on your setting and student needs.

My favorite ways to use them:

• dot the circles with dot markers
• color the circles with crayons or markers
• place stickers on the circles
• laminate and use dry-erase markers
• cover circles with playdough
• add spinners, dice, or tokens to turn them into simple board games

Fall Articulation Practice Ideas

I use these materials for both articulation and language practice, especially on busy days when I don’t have time to plan separate activities.

Articulation Ideas

• Name a picture (word level), then place a token or playdough on it
• Say the word and use it in a sentence (sentence level), then take a turn
• Pick two pictures and create a sentence using both words
• Choose a favorite or least favorite picture and explain why
• Use a coin or dice to move along a game board and name pictures as you go

These ideas support word, sentence, and connected-speech practice.

Language Practice Ideas

These smash mats also work well for language goals:

• Name a function or category of a picture
• Describe a picture using attributes
• Find two related pictures and explain the connection
• Pick an action, character, and place to create a short story

This makes them especially helpful for mixed groups.
