What is the Easing Out Stuttering Strategy?

This strategy is especially helpful for individuals who stutter and experience tension in their speech/muscles. It can help reduce physical tension and shorten stuttering moments.

When to Use The Easing Out Stuttering Technique?

Easing out is a speech technique used to reduce the impact of stuttering by modifying how you respond to it. Instead of trying to force through or avoid the stutter, the strategy focuses on recognizing it, reducing physical tension, and continuing to speak smoothly.

By practicing this technique, individuals can develop greater control over their speech, reduce negative emotions associated with stuttering, and build confidence.

How It Works:

  1. Catch the Stutter:
The first step is recognizing when you are stuttering. This awareness helps shift the focus from trying to avoid the stutter to managing it.
  2. Reduce Tension:
Pay attention to where you feel tension during the stutter. This might be in your jaw, lips, throat, etc... Take a moment to consciously relax those tense muscles.
  3. Finish the Word:
With the tension reduced, continue the word or sound smoothly. The goal is to ease out of the stuttering moment gently, without rushing or forcing speech.

Word Level Practice

To build familiarity and comfort with the easing out strategy, try practicing it at the word level. Focus on catching the stutter, relaxing the tension, and finishing the word smoothly. Below are some words to get started:

  1. dream
  2. big
  3. soft
  4. smart
  5. best
  6. thin
  7. clear
  8. sweet
  9. wild
  10. learn
  11. key
  12. bed
  13. zone
  14. rock
