What is Easy Onset For Stuttering Therapy?

Easy onset for stuttering therapy is a speech modification strategy which means that you are altering your speech in order to increase fluency. By easing into the word, you can reduce tension and improve the overall smoothness of your speech.

How to Practice Easy Onset:

  1. Take a Breath: Begin by taking a slow, deep breath to calm your body and mind.
  2. Exhale an /h/ Sound: As you exhale, produce a soft, quiet "hhh" sound.
  3. Gradually Turn On Your Voice: Slowly turn on your voice and start to produce the vowel sound.
  4. Increase Volume Gradually: Gradually increase the volume of your voice as you continue to produce the vowel sound/word.

Practice Time!

Here are some examples of how to practice easy onset at the word level:

  • Single Words:
    • apple: hhh-apple
    • orange: hhh-orange
    • umbrella: hhh-umbrella
    • airplane: hhh-airplane
    • elephant: hhh-elephant
  • Sentences:
    • hhh-Apples are very sweet and crunchy.
    • hhh-Oranges are tricky to peel.
    • hhh-Umbrellas should be opened outside.
    • hhh-Airplanes are flying high in the sky.
    • hhh-Elephants are drinking from the lake.
