Speech Therapy Screening Tools
Efficient Screening and Goal Review for School-Based and Clinical SLPs
Effective speech therapy screening tools support strong clinical decision-making at key transition points—beginning of the year, after breaks, or when reviewing student progress. Screening is not just about identifying needs; it also provides an opportunity to reconnect students with their goals and refocus therapy.
This page outlines practical ways to use speech therapy screening tools alongside structured goal review to support efficient, meaningful intervention.

Review Goals
First things first, we MUST review goals with our students. Setting and reviewing speech therapy goals is essential and so often skipped.
Students must understand the reason for their therapy. Without this understanding, they won't be able to measure their progress, celebrate their achievements, and/or even know where to focus their precious energy!
Here are some ways and materials to EASILY review goals and encourage self-assessment this year!
- Introduce Goals: Write out the student’s goals at the start of the school year or treatment program. In every subsequent session, review these goals verbally, by writing them down, or by using a goal review sheet. You can use the resources shown below to help (they are from the Speech Therapy Talk Membership site).
- Create Smaller Goals: Break larger goals into smaller, manageable ones, including IEP benchmarks. For example, if a child is working on the /r/ sound, set specific, smaller targets like saying /r/ without rounding lips or discriminating between /r/ and /w/.

If you get in the habit of reviewing goals at the beginning/end of each session, you can celebrate progress and small wins. Write down the progress, even if it’s just on a dry-erase board, and ask the child to reflect on their performance.
If a goal wasn’t met, celebrate another achievement to end on a positive note. If this becomes part of your therapy routine, you will be amazed by the progress your students make this year.
