Why I chose speech language pathology as a career?

I switched my major to speech pathology at the last moment in undergrad because I realized that helping people and making a difference in their lives while having a flexible schedule would be my ideal job! I wanted to feel good about my work.

Great news....these wishes all came true!

There have been some unforeseen drawbacks: paperwork, insurance, noncompliance from clients, licensing hassles, and MEETINGS!

If you are thinking about studying speech language pathology or are becoming a speech pathologist or looking for a job change, please read my thoughts and experiences from each setting below.

It may give you insight into what you are looking for.

Insider Scoop: Speech Language Pathology

I have worked in almost all settings during my husband’s PhD and postdoc. They all have been rewarding with a few drawbacks. My advice is to make a list of your must haves when choosing a job.

Some things to consider:

  1. Option for part-time
  2. Weekend or evening hours
  3. Pay
  4. Work with adults
  5. Work with children
  6. Productivity rules
  7. Paperwork demands
