My speech materials self-assessment tool is one of my favorite materials. It can be used with all students and has made such a difference in my student's progress!
By having students assess their own learning, I couldn't believe how fast they made progress. It is actually obvious... but not always easy to do.
What Is This Speech Therapy Self Assessment Tool All About?
This speech therapy self-assessment tool allows, you, the therapist and your students to review individual goals before each session and assess progress towards those goals.
This 30-second review is a great reminder for students on WHY they are in speech therapy.
Students take ownership over their learning. They learn how to know if they are being successful. This can translate into a child becoming a motivated learner.

How To Create The Speech Therapy Self Assessment Tool
First, open the self-assessment guide below. Print 5 or 6 copies and laminated them.
The first page is what the children will use to assess their learning. The colored circles are a visual system that helps all students be able to take part in the self-assessment process, even non-readers students.
Attach some velcro to the visuals and to the question sheet so students can stick on their answers (this is motivating within itself).
How To Use Speech Materials Self-Assessment Guide:
At the beginning of each session, hand out the laminated self-assessment guide. Write in each student's individual goal at the top while the students are present. This will remind them of their individual goals. Then, put the sheets aside.
During the last 5 minutes of the session, read through each question on the sheet and have each student pick their responses and Velcro them to their sheet. Once every student has completed that step, review the responses and discusses what you would have picked and why.
