Halloween is an awesome, sugary holiday—free candy, costumes, and neighborhood fun. But for children who are non-verbal, not talking yet, or difficult to understand, trick-or-treating can feel stressful instead of joyful.
That’s why I created these trick or treat cards for non-verbal kids—to make Halloween simple, fun, and successful for everyone involved.
These cards give children an easy way to communicate during a highly motivating activity without pressure, long explanations, or awkward moments at the door.

These cards give children an easy way to communicate during a highly motivating activity without pressure, long explanations, or awkward moments at the door.
How to Use Trick or Treat Cards
Preparation
- Print the cards (print a few copies)
- Cut them out
- Sort them into 3 simple piles
- Place each pile in an envelope to stay organized
How to Use Them
- Have your child ring the doorbell
- Give your child a “Trick or Treat” card
- Encourage your child to hand the card to the adult at the door
- This is real communication in a natural setting
- After receiving candy, have your child give a “Thank You” or “Happy Halloween” card
- If appropriate, encourage your child to try saying the phrase on the card
- Keep it simple—no explaining required. Just enjoy the moment

Why These Trick or Treat Cards Work
There are many cards available that explain a child’s diagnosis or communication needs in detail. If those work for your family—great! Use what feels right.
For me, Halloween is about:
- Having fun
- Reducing pressure
- Avoiding uncomfortable explanations
- Protecting a child’s dignity
Long explanations can feel unnecessary—or even embarrassing—for some children. These cards keep communication functional, respectful, and age-appropriate.
