Articulation Smash Mats – All Sounds

Low-Prep, High-Practice Articulation for Real Therapy Days

Articulation practice can be tedious—and overplanning doesn’t help anyone.

To reduce prep time while still getting a high number of correct productions, I created articulation smash mats for all sounds and all word positions. These materials are designed to be simple, flexible, and motivating, so you can focus on therapy—not setup.

Speech Therapy Smashmats

Why Articulation Smash Mats Work

Effective articulation therapy requires:

  • frequent, correct repetitions
  • consistent practice
  • activities that don’t interrupt the flow of a session

These articulation smash mats are:

  • easy to use across sessions
  • adaptable for different goals and ages
  • ideal for mixed groups
  • quick to reset and reuse

How I Use Articulation Smash Mats in Therapy

You can use these smash mats in many ways. Here are a few of my go-to ideas.

(Tip: Print and laminate pages so you can reuse them with tokens, dry-erase markers, or playdough.)

Articulation Practice Ideas

  • Word level: Name the picture, then place a token or playdough
  • Sentence level: Say the word and use it in a sentence before taking a turn
  • Two-word challenge: Pick two pictures and create a sentence using both
  • Connected speech: Choose a favorite or least favorite picture and explain why
  • Game format: Use dice or a coin to move along a game board and name pictures as you pass them

These options allow you to increase complexity while keeping practice engaging.

Language Practice Ideas

Although designed for articulation, these smash mats also work well for language goals:

  • Name the function or category of a picture
  • Describe a picture using attributes
  • Find two related pictures and explain why
  • Choose an action, place, and character to create a short story

This makes them especially useful for mixed articulation–language groups.

About

Hi,

I'm  Bridget Giraldo, MS CCC-SLP

I've been a speech-language pathologist since 2006 — in schools, hospitals, preschools, and private practice. I created Speech Therapy Talk because I kept making materials I couldn't find anywhere else: research-based, bilingual, no-prep, and built for real caseloads. Now, I share them here.
