Cariboo Speech Therapy

High-Trial Articulation & Language Practice Kids Love

I’ll admit it—I’ve embraced Cariboo speech therapy.

Students love it. Sessions move quickly. And most importantly, I can get a high number of meaningful speech and language trials in just minutes.

When motivation is high, practice doesn’t feel like work—and that’s where real progress happens.

Why Cariboo Works So Well for Speech Therapy

Cariboo-style games naturally support:

  • turn-taking
  • repetition
  • engagement
  • fast pacing

For articulation alone, it’s easy to get 30+ correct productions in a short amount of time—without drills feeling repetitive or tedious.

That’s why Cariboo has become a go-to activity in my therapy room.

Two Cariboo Speech Therapy Card Options

I offer two Cariboo speech therapy card sets. Both are effective—but they’re designed for slightly different needs.

Option 1: Cariboo Cards Using High-Frequency Words

This set is designed with generalization in mind.

What makes these cards different:

  • High-frequency words children actually say outside the therapy room
  • Carefully designed progression from word → phrase → sentence
  • Only one occurrence of the target sound per phrase or sentence, making the transition between levels more manageable
  • Simple visuals with clean lines to reduce printing costs

This set is ideal if you prioritize carryover and confidence.

Option 2: Cariboo Cards with Colorful Images

This set includes:

  • Attention-grabbing, colorful visuals
  • High-frequency words when appropriate
  • Strong visual support for younger students or those who benefit from extra engagement

This option works well for students who need strong visual motivation.

What’s Included in Both Cariboo Speech Therapy Sets

  • Target sounds: B, CH, D, F, G, J, K, L, M, N, P, R, S, SH, T, TH, V, Z
  • Initial, medial, and final word positions
  • Approximately 60 pages per set
  • Organized by sound for easy access

How I Use Cariboo Cards in Speech Therapy

You can adapt these cards for a wide range of goals. Below are some of my favorite ways to use them.

Articulation

  • Word level: Name the card before opening a box
  • Carrier phrase: “I want to open ___”
  • Sentence level: Use the word in a complete sentence before taking a turn

Language Goals

Cariboo cards work just as well for language practice:

  • Grammar: Use the word in a sentence targeting pronouns, verbs, or conjunctions
  • Vocabulary: Define the word before taking a turn
  • Categorization: Name the category the picture belongs to
  • Function: Explain what the object is used for
  • Location: Say where the object is found
  • Similarities & differences: Open two boxes after explaining how the pictures are alike or different

This makes Cariboo especially helpful for mixed articulation-language groups.

About

Hi,

I'm  Bridget Giraldo, MS CCC-SLP

I've been a speech-language pathologist since 2006 — in schools, hospitals, preschools, and private practice. I created Speech Therapy Talk because I kept making materials I couldn't find anywhere else: research-based, bilingual, no-prep, and built for real caseloads. Now, I share them here.
